Heaps of 7 four-wheelers - They were bought purely from the sweat of the staff and NEVER FROM THE OFFERINGS IN THE CHURCHES.

Devils at work...

The  photos below show the 'instigated' students and rowdies on a rampage! Note the cricket stumps, hockey sticks, iron rods, stones used in their acts of violence...

Stone already in store in and around the college chapel... a holy activity of those Bishop's men...

The property damages in the residence of Dr. Silas Ebenezer, who is staying inside the campus.. shows absolute insecurity even to faculty members staying inside the campus...

FROM THE ROAD

It was a horrible day – a big Black Day in the annals of the history of The American College. Still unable to give any meaning to this mishap.

With a very heavy heart I submit these photos for posterity!

IS THIS 'OUR OWN' COLLEGE ... ?

IS THIS 'OUR OWN' COLLEGE ... ?

*Image and video hosting by TinyPic
(Nothing said below is in any way any exaggeration. The next post with photos will stand proof for all these. This post is only a preparation for that future shock for you.)

Today is a very disheartening day. Our campus has seen something today which none of its alumni or anybdy related to our college would ever dreamt. HOOLIGANISM to the core … let out by some of our own students – against their own faculty and peers.

Students who stood for the college had a relay-fast last week supporting our casue. Today Faculty also joined this fast demanding quick justice. These people were all near the Washburn Gate. To show their animosity a group of bishoporic students with public address system started heckling us from the portico of the Main Hall. They even spelt out individual names of faculty and made worse comments. Our people never reacted to this. The police never did anything to stop all this.

Against the fast, the bishoporic gang had their own ‘eating fest’. Neatly packed ‘Jaffer Briyani’ was provided to them. During this time some stones were thrown into the shamiana of the fasting faculty. Probably that was a signal to the police! The police van left the campus leaving just 3 cops. Once the police left their cordon the ‘students’ started throwing stones against the fasting staff and students. It was a 'rain of stones'. (Later we found that around our revered Chapel these stones were in ready stock! Photos will prove this.) Defenseless people had to rush off for safety and the only way out was the road. They rushed to the road and blocked the traffic. They were chased outside the gate, even injuring the cops.

When the fasting people rushed outside the campus, the raging ‘students’ started violently  breaking the vehicles there. They were very selective. They broke the vehicles of staff. 5 cars of faculty were completely destroyed. They broke all the glasses and made heavy work on the body. They felt that it was complete only when all the cars were turned upside down. Two wheelers of the staff were also run down by the hysteric mob.

Police force came at their own leisure and concentrated on the group outside, trying to chase them off from the road but never bothering about the hooliganism inside the campus.

The hysteric mob then proceeded to Principal’s House. Photos in the next post would show how violent they were. They tried to break open the doors of the Morning Side. Principal’s mother, an 85 year old lady had to hide herself in the bathroom. Luckily the door did not give in.

Thinking that a car that stood near Morning Side was Principal's own car, the crowd did the maximum damage to that car and also made heavy damage to an omni van behind Morning Side,  Then they went to one the Wardens’ house – Dr.Silas. They were able to get into the house; broke the TV and audio systems. Their dog, Snoopy was able to chase the crowd and save the inmates.

With a heap of 7 cars and nearly 30 two wheelers the campus near the Flint House looked like a ravaged place.

Image and video hosting by TinyPicI HAVE SOME QUESTIONS:

With my experience of 33 years in the campus, I have always found our students raising to the occasion always. How come that sort of students became so violent against their own faculty and peers? The whole episode, when happened before my own eyes, was so unbelievable to me who was in the campus for so long ….

One of the students on our side tried to passify me saying that out of the 60-70 gangsters that came against us only around 20 were our students –specifically from one particular class.. Some old students, who were ‘brought up’ by the bishoporic gang during the last struggle were there and the other half of the crowd was out and out hired hooligans.

Even this does not satisfy me …They may be just 20 or so … still HOW COME OUR OWN STUDENTS GO FOR THIS RAMPAGE? How come the traditional well mannered students became such monsters?

ANOTHER QUESTION TO OUR COLLEAGUES ON THE ‘OTHER’ SIDE.
Leave alone those who are on that side for some ‘BONES’ thrown at them. And also forget those who stand with davamani on ‘personal loyalty’. They have some great (!)  purpose!

But those who are there killing their conscience and still be on that side .. only those rascals make me wonder what sort of people are they and what is the ‘heritage’ they have inherited. How can anybody with some semblance of conscience be still there after this collapse of any decency. I really doubt their …. Let me not say what I really mean.

FAST APPROACHING - THE DAY OF RECKONING

The laughable elevation of the son-in-law of the Bishop Asir by Asir himelf with the help of the servile and illegal makeshift Governing Council to the position of the Principal of The American College, defies all logic and is contrary to the Constitution and the accepted practice followed all these years. It also amounts to contempt of court.

The fig leaf has fallen and the naked nepotism of the Bishop  is on full display for all to see.  As usual, there is no sense of shame or guilt on his part. But, to put an utterly incompetent person like his son-in-law in the hallowed position of the Principal of this great institution is nothing but a tragedy and an insult to the collective wisdom of its  academic community and the people at large. Probably he feels that as Bishop he has limitless powers under the sun and he could do whatever he wants to do. He seems to suffer from an illusion that he is answerable to nobody including God, who he professes to serve.

This act of arrogance and stupidity appears to be the culmination of all the audacious attacks mounted on the College for the past three years. This has to be challenged, checked and stopped at any cost. This is the time to bury the hatchet, get united and deal a fatal blow, with all the force in our command, to the evil designs of the Bishop, and redeem this great institution once and for all.

Let the Bishop and his henchmen realise that the day of reckoning is approaching and is approaching fast.

TRIBUTE TO Mr. S. R. SANKARAN, A FORMER LECTURER IN COMMERCE

S.R. SANKARAN

Dear Dharumi:

Some time back I thought I will discontinue my writing to the IPAC blog after a  remark by one of its readers. But my concern for the college and my interest in collecting material for the History of the College to be kept in a repository has made me forget the insult and continue my writing.

The Magazine Section of The Hindu of this morning (31.10.10) carries an article entitled "A legacy of goodness". It is about Mr. S. R. Sankaran, a former Lecturer in Commerce in our College. He is one of the young lecturers of the College to join the IAS. The article describes his work. I am particularly interested that all who read this should read that article so I do not wish to say anything more about Mr. Sankaran or his work, except to say that he was the first with B. Com (Honours) degree in commerce to be appointed in the College in that department when rest of the department consisted of a B.Com graduate, an economics MA, a part-time lawer and a part-time auditor (CA). A tutor in the Mathematics Department was engaged to teach the B.Com students business mathematics and statistics.

There was a time when many young and bright facuty members were recruited to teach in the College as lecturers, Tutors and Demonstrators. They almost formed a club preparing for IAS and other similar Central and State service examinations. Sankaran is probably the first example. Some other IAS officers are:  K.Srinivasan (Chemistry lecturer and NCC officer), who served as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Defence, Government of India, Ramakrishnan (Mathematics lecturer, who rose to the rank of Chief Secretary in Tamilnadu). They are both old students of the College. There were a few like Sham Sundar (Zoology lecturer) now an officer in the rank of ADGP in Tamilnadue and, Senthamarai Kannan (Zoology lecturer) who joined IPS. They were old students of the college as well.

A a person (I think his name is Kalyanaraman) from the Chemistry department was successful in the IAS written examination and went to the final interview at UPSC and was not fortunate to get through the interview, later joined the LIC (when it was nationalized) as an officer in the rank of IAS officers and rose to the rank of Deputy Zonal Manager.

Many Physics and Chemistry demonstrators and a Mathematics tutor were successful in the SAS (Subordinate Accounts Service) examinations of Government of India and ended up in the AG's (Accounted General's) office in Chennai and elsewhere and became Deputy Accountent Generals.

Why I recall all these is these days? These days when an youngester joins the College they close their eyes to other opportunitis that could take them to greater heights. My advice to them will be when you are young, fresh from the College keep reading using the best library in the College and sit for some of the national and state level competetive examinations. No doubt the salaries of College staff are good these days and (thanks to MUTA) there is job security but making your talents available to the country and state is even more useful than confining yourself to Gorippalayam in Madurai.
