EFFORTS TO RESOLVE AMERICAN COLLEGE IMBROGLIO UNDERWAY UNDER WAY: MODERATOR

*

We will ensure that no staff member is sent out of the college: G. Devakadasham
Moderator of the Church of South India G. Devakadasham has begun consultations with various stake holders of the American College here to resolve the issues concerning its management over the past few years.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday, Most Reverent Bishop G. Devakadasham, who is also now the President of the Governing Council of American College, said that a Governing Council meeting was conducted earlier in the day in which all but two of the Governing Council members took part.

Talks were also held with the former Principal of the American College T. Chinnaraj Joseph Jaikumar, and other officials in which three main issues concerning the college were discussed.

They include: issues concerning the students and parents such as examinations and issuing of degree certificates; the issue concerning the teaching and non-teaching staff such as non-payment of salaries; and finally the administration of the college.

Holding of exams
The issue of holding examinations for students who had missed them for various reasons would be taken up with the Madurai Kamaraj University.

Further, an expert committee headed by P. Chelladurai, Professor and Head, Department of Youth Welfare Studies, Madurai Kamaraj University, would be constituted soon to look into the issues concerning the students .

“We will ensure that no staff member is sent out of the college. I am optimistic that all issues concerning the management of the college would be resolved to the satisfaction of all stake holders within the next academic year.” He also added that the management of the American College would continue to remain with the Bishop of Madurai-Ramnad Diocese. Dismissing concerns over the legality of the Governing Council, he said it had now been accepted by the stake holders.

When was the management of The American College with the Bishop of the Madurai-Ramnad Diocese so that it would “continue to remain” with him? The management of the college has been with none other than its bona fide Governing Council as represented by its bona fide Secretary. With due respect to the Moderator and his much-talked-of-efforts to resolve the issues we want him to know that he needs to prove to this college—even in his newly assumed honorary capacity as the Chairman of the Council for the time being—that his intent, not just approach, is different from that of his infamous predecessor. How does he say their Council “had now been accepted by [all] the stake holders?” It is a false claim, as I understand. Why should anyone say like that then?

  2. It is nothing but a travesty of truth to say that the management of the American College would continue to be with the Bishop of Madurai-Ramnad Diocese. This College, as per the desire and vision of its founding fathers, has always been a church-related but never a church-controlled institution. In fact, the now four-year old struggle has been mainly for preserving and protecting that unique identity and individuality.
All the sufferings undergone and the sacrifices made would become meaningless if,in the name of finding a solution, the fundamental administrative structure and the noble traditions of the College are allowed to be tampered with.
And the efforts to legitimise the Governing Council convened by the illegal and unapproved Principal and Secretary, with lame excuses, strengthen the suspicion of the presence of hidden agenda of the actors involved.
