Prof. V.SRINIVASAN

Another senior colleague has passed away, Prof.V.Srinivasan, HOD of physics dept, The American college, Madurai. He was 89. People used to say such demises after a successful life should be celebrated. VS, as we used to call him, had such a lively life in the campus. He had an astonishing memory for events and occasions. He could pick out an incident which could have disappeared from all our minds; he would remember any reputable academician visiting our campus and would reel out all related matters of that visit. A very systematic person and a perfectionist.

Personally I learnt a lot from him and even told him I may not follow his foot steps, since it used to be so perfect. Till this day when I search for any of my personal things, I just remember him. He exactly knows where his personal things would be, unlike me always scrambling for them! He started a photography elective course from his department and gave me a vital role in that course, from making a syllabus and preparing a handout. I made a blow up photograph of South Tower of Meenakshi Temple. He made it hang on the walls of Principal’s office for some time and took a copy of it for his personal use.

Even after moving to Thane, Mumbai we had been communicating and used to listen sadly to the happenings in the campus.

My sincere condolences.

Prof. V. SRINIVASAN

MRJ - LOSS OF A FRIEND

YEARS are slipping off under our feet. We are aging. We keep losing  friends one after another. Some of such moments pain us so much. One is the recent demise of Prof.Dr. M.R. James, known to all of us as MRJ, the ever smiling and smooth youthful man.

MRJ started his carrier as head of Botany department in our college. I have seen most of the heads of departments, when elevated as head, adorn themselves with a glittering crown over their heads, sit in a  high-backed chair and invariably put a fence around them. All  the philosophy of “all are equal” would be simply thrown off into dust. They usually take a new “avatar”. But this gentle man was entirely a different kind. Headship never made him big or different. Never he showed any ‘big bossism’! I very strongly feel he should be considered as a great ‘model professor’. Not only colleagues, his students too can feel the closeness with him. His lab assistants will vouch for his care and concern. It is very tough to be a good person for all around but MRJ proved it so easily and casually.

A trimmed beard, white shirt and black pants, and always a burning cigarette were his trade marks. Wonder whether he became a non-smoker lately! He never showed any barriers. Always cool and friendly. But when needed he would become serious too, since he is a man of convictions.

Personally, I am a gifted guy. He was always close to me. Our common interest in photography made us share a close relationship. Though there was a dark room in my department, he very happily shared the dark room of his department.  For long, the key of that room was with me. His association helped me develop some talent in macrophotography. His department purchased a costly microscope with attachments for macrophotography. I was freely allowed to use that. During that time many research scholars came to him for taking macrophotographs. He sent them to me and many a time he would give his room keys – the symbol of authority for many HODs – even for overnight use which I would never imagine from any other HODs I have known all through. He was special to me.

Sad we could not maintain our relationship after he moved to Coimbatore.  He was busy there being the secretary or something in his apartment and told me that he was very much involved in  the activities of the  association. This reminded me that decades earlier, nearly fifty years back, his living area in Madurai had the ground water polluted by a nearby soft drink company. He almost did an one-man-fight and took it to the level of collector. He successfully won his fight. A relentless fighter.

My very sincere condolences to his family.

SAD DEMISE OF ANOTHER FRIEND .... DR. KARUPIAH JAYARAJ

A SHISYA AND HIS GURU ...

A EULOGY

of an alumnus of our college,

Mr. SOMASUNDARAM,

Commandant, Indian Coast Guard

on

PROF. R. PADMANABHAN NAIR

*****

Prof RP Nair, My Pole Star!

In our country since beginning of the Vedic Age, the relationship between the Guru and his Shishya has been the much celebrated one! This unique relationship has a certain place in one's bosom and remains as lifelong memory with both or either of the survivor!

I being the survivor, since my beloved teacher and mentor Prof RP Nair passed away yesterday, would like to share some of the memories I cherish about him.

1989-91. After my graduation in Chemistry, I wanted to do post graduation in English, that too at the prestigious American College, Madurai. Post Graduation in English Literature from the American College is a dream for many students in Tamil Nadu. Only a  few lucky ones like me could realize it, while still it remains a dream for many. I prepared hard for the entrance exam and having qualified appeared for the interview. Prof RP Nair was the HOD of PG English Department. I was anxious to face the interview panel consisting of five illustrious professors of English Literature like Dr Paul L. Love, Prof RP Nair, Prof J Vasanthan, Prof R Nedumaran, and Dr. Pramila Paul. The members put me at ease at the very beginning and I was at home with them. What I feared most was the grueling interview! But it became a friendly chat! Since I had not read much in English Literature and  my reading was only limited to the non-detailed text in Part-I English of B.Sc program, the interview panel was only trying to find out my passion for literature unmindful of my poor Spoken English and limited knowledge about English Literature. The interview still remains in my memory as it was the first interview in my life! Needless to mention that I qualified in the interview also, a remarkable feat indeed considering my Non-English major background!

Prof RP Nair, taught us the Aspects of Prose in the first semester. What could have been mundane prosaic sessions were turned into poetic ones by the magical wand of him, who made us understand the 'unseens' and appreciate the nuances of lyrical prose! My poetic persona was turning prosaic, and the prosaic persona was turning poetic! And I could feel the  metamorphosis happening simultaneously during his class! What an imaginative method of teaching! He would soak us in the literary brook and make us feel as fresh as dew-dropped flowers! His classes used to be more participative and he used to encourage discussions. I was a green horn at that time (not that it has become grey now!) but he used to handle me maturely. I still laugh at my foolishness of having entered into some stupid arguments, while at the same time rave about his deft handling of such morons with knowledge and maturity. He guided me into the correct path of literary appreciation without making me feel inadequate or insecure. That is his greatness! My inquisitive self always found an answer in him for he was a walking encyclopaedia! I used to remember the Guru-Shishya parampara fables that I had been reading since my childhood!

Francis Bacon, the father of English essays says, "Reading makes a complete man, conference a ready man, and writing an exact man." Nairji, as we affectionately addressed him, was a visual embodiment of all the above rolled into one! He was a voracious reader, powerful orator, and a prolific writer! Need not these qualities enough for inspiring his students! Having heard about his reading skills I wanted to emulate him and used to read in the PG English Department library till 11pm. Whatever I've read in those two years from 1989-91 holds me in good stead even now. That was his motivation! Till I joined PG English program, I was proud of my Tamil heritage and literature. Nairji opened the window to the world literature and made me see the vignettes of world literature. But for him I would have remained a Tamil fanatic! In that sense he was my eye opener!

Before the end-of-semester exams we would be assigned a project paper for every course of that semester. If Madurai Kamarajar University followed only two papers per semester, the American College, being an autonomous institution, followed five papers per semester. You can guage the depth of our studies by this! Nairji taught us European Literature in translation. Samuel Beckett's 'Waiting for Godot' is a French play translated into English. The play is about the Christian belief of God's coming again and the characters' hopeless wait for His coming! I argued with Nairji that though the play was based on the Christian belief, what made the play unique was its universal appeal of waiting for the God! Nairji asked me to clarify my point. I said that in all religions of the world God's coming is the main hope for human beings' salvation. In the Bhagavad-Gita, Lord Krishna says that whenever there is adharma he'll reincarnate and come to the rescue of humankind! Nairji encouraged me to do a  project paper on the subject and I submitted my project paper, "Waiting for Godot from the view point of the Bhagavad-Gita." Nairji not only appreciated the paper but also forwarded to Dr. Charles Ryerson, Professor and Head of the Department of Religion & Theology, Princeton University, USA. Dr. Charles Ryerson, my another mentor, held that it was the best paper he had ever received  and published it in the Princeton University journal. This is just to highlight to what extent a teacher can catapult his student!

When I chose to translate TS Eliot's much difficult poem, "The Waste Land" as a project for my 'Translation Problems & Techniques' paper, I turned to Nairji for help. The Waste Land is one of the great poems written in the 20th century about the degradation of moral values in the Western society in the aftermath of the world wars. The poet laments about the moral degradation and seeks solution in the Eastern religious beliefs, particularly the Vedic scriptures. He ends the poem with quotes from Brihadharanyaka Upanishads, Datta (charity), Damyata (Self-discipline), and Dayaatva (empathy) as solutions to the moral degradation which will result in Shanti, Shanti, Shanti! The poem is so challenging not only because of its length but also because of its references to various religious texts! More so the liberal usage of diction and phrases from French, German, and Sanskrit makes it more complicated! Since the poem had been translated into Malayalam by the doyen of Malayalam Literature, Ayyappa Panikker, and Nairji was his student, I couldn't find anyone better than him. As Nairji read out the poem translated into Malayalam as Tharisu Bhoomi in Malayalam, I transcribed the same in Tamil just to understand the nuances and lyrics of it! Instead of translating directly into Tamil, I was able to translate it through the poetic vehicle of Malayalam. And the credit entirely goes to Nairji for working besides me with true care and patience. Till date the translated work of mine titled, Tharisu Nilam, remains my priceless possession! That sort of commitment is very rare now, and I was fortunate being his student!

I can go on endlessly on my meandering stream of consciousness, but the two most valuable lessons I learnt from Nairji are Hope and Principled Steadfastness! When I passed out MA English in first class, Nairji was more happy than me for by then our relationship had  become that of a father and his son. When I asked him, "Sir, now that you've equipped me with knowledge and language, what's the purpose studying  literature and how it helps in serving the society?". Nairji replied in his inimitable style, "The purpose of studying literature is to remain hopeful in all circumstances and to stand up with moral courage to say NO to self-serving authority in whichever form." Nairji, I hope I've imbibed your teaching not only in every word, but also every letter of it! Among the galaxy of teachers in the American College, you will remain my Pole Star alongwith Dr. Paul L.Love! Kindly lead me to the light of knowledge and wisdom!

Rest In Peace Beloved Nairji!

PROF. PADMANABHAN NAIR - RPN

'It is good" என்றார். You know the reason. It was quite good and touched me so much' என்றார்.

Ar. MEYYAMMAI ON DSL

*

Farewell to fatherly prof
I rushed to see you
You didn't,
You didn't for once.
Doors closed
Ambulance moved
in a pace you would like!
I followed your convoy quietly.
Eyebrows rose
I rode, eyes welling up
Teardrops rolling down now and then
as I heard you care for me
like nobody else have.
All in a fatherly tone!
You reached your destination
All dressed up for the occasion
Lying down in casket
Bespectacled face
as bright as north star
Your gentle spirit smiling
And peace pervading!
Priests called upon the Lord
Prayed for your soul
Vowed to surrender your body
to mother Nature
And gave way believing in resurrection.
You led us to crematorium
As I saw, you were slided into the chamber
to be reduced to ashes.
You are gone, not for me!
Your gentle spirit smiles,
Your soft voice reverberates,
And peace pervades! Amen!
AR Meyyammai
D. Samuel Lawrence, fondly called DSL, my dear professor, who was genuinely interested in my and my daughter's well-being, passed away on May 23. He made it a mandate to call me at least once a month, even as he was on dialysis, and enquire about us both. I was gifted to have a person like him as my teacher.
I shall always treasure the memories of all that is uniquely you, Sir!
Poetry being spontaneous overflow of powerful emotions, this is the poem I penned down soon after I returned home from the Keerathurai crematorium where Prof DSL was cremated according to his wish. He donated his eyes to Aravind Eye Hospital.

Sam on Prof. DSL

Ok.. We will meet என்றார்.

AN OBITUARY NOTE ON KSR FROM A FRIEND

A  LETTER  FROM  POOVAN MURUGESAN, San Diego, CA

                                     KOLA SANTOSH RAJKUMAR 1945-2016

It was in 1957 that I met Raj at the American College High School. We were both in 9th grade, in Mr. Johnson’s class. Raj in those days wore baggy pants, a half-sleeve shirt with a big pocket that carried several pens and pencils and a pen-length screw driver. Raj was a gifted handyman even in those days. Another unique thing about Raj was that he drove a motorcycle to school. Motorized two-wheelers were rare back then and then a 14-year-old driving a motorcycle was rarer.  Our paths diverged briefly, but we became classmates once again in PUC at the American College. After B.Sc. at different institutions, we again found ourselves as classmates in M.Sc. physics. Our friendship had enough time to blossom. We became good friends. Generous to a fault, he offered an unconditional friendship. I spent a lot of time during weekends at his family home on North Masi Street. I got to know the family.
Raj had a workshop in his house even in his student days, where he repaired electronic instruments, constructed radios and did other repairs. He enjoyed every minute of it.
Till the end, he exhibited an enormous stamina and a willingness for hard work. At his age, he carried a full load of work at Aravind Hospital and carried on an extensive personal and official international travel. During my last visit to India, I casually mentioned to him that it would be nice if we got together with our M.Sc. classmates. He somehow dug up the phone numbers of some of them and arranged a get-together. Some of us got to see each other after a gap of nearly 50 years!

He was a quintessential family man. He was proud of his son (at Google) and daughter ( a doctor in London), but without exhibiting negative ego. He remained simple in his habits and loyal to his friends. Whenever I visited India, I could count on seeing Raj in his baggy pants, a half-sleeve shirt and on a motor cycle. His sudden death has been a rude shock to me. I have lost my best friend.

A TRIBUTE TO KSR

A  LETTER  FROM  Prof.  V. SRINIVASAN

*

Bi-Cycles were the vehicles of the lecturers and demonstrators of the American College for many years in the good old days. A few were proud of their imported bi-cycles from Singapore, Malaysia or Ceylon with some extra fittings and very bright shining handle bars. Then mechanized two wheelers started making their appearance one by one. When Enfiled India Motor cycle manufacturing factory, near Melur,  came into existence a good number of  "bikes" became affordable vehicles that replaced bicycles. A few  Vespa/Bajaj scooters that was possible with dollar payment also invaded the campus along with one or more lambretta scooters that were wedding gifts for some. The result was an informal association known as TWA (Two wheelers association) was formed. Though the bicycles also had only two wheels that fact was coolly forgotten. With faster and quicker mobility the TWA started planning short trips  and picnics on holidays and weekends. Friends of "bikers" joined in such trips and thus an informal PRA (Pillion rider association) also came into being. There were several short trips with few friends now and then, Vasanthan, Sam George and a few others taking the lead.

It was once decided that TWA should go on a long one day trip. The destination choses chosen was Bathlagundu where there was a promise of a host receiving us with food and refreshment. There were about 15 two wheelers and a few cars (George Berlin, Dr. Riesz + Haris and some friends)  It turned out to be a memorable trip for all and an important trip for the College also. The first discussion on College autonomy happened there in the mango grove. The editorial on the subject in the local news paper about that time initiated the discussion. There were nearly 35 to 40 faculty members in that trip.

The second long trip was to Periar and the third to Courtalam with over night stay. All of them were grand successes. An unforgettable incidence in one trip was a PWA member was left out on the high way during a break and this was noticed only after the convoy had gone a good distance. He was later picked up and joined with the troupe by one who was a fast rider. The culprit was me and the victim was Dr P M Sundaram!

On these trips not all vehicles had smooth ride for the entire length of the trip. Tube puncture, leakage of air from the tires and fixing them and manually pumping air on the main road was probably simplest break down  events and on one occasion a large scale repair had to be undertaken lasting for a few hours. Why I recall this now one may wonder.

There is a reason. In all these trips most of the vehicle owners especially the ones with secondhand vehicles were comfortable on these trips mainly because Mr. K S Rajkumar. He was a master servicemen who understood major and minor ailments  of the vehicles voluntarily. Riding majestically on his second world war model motor cycle at a steady speed behind all the other vehicles he was a guardian angel for all. He is now no more with us. I write this on behalf of TWA and PRA of American college to convey our gratitude for his willing assistance. God Bless KSR.

I hope the college Faculty members as his friends, the Department of Applied Sciences and PG and UG Physics Departments in the College where he had served undertake some action and create a memorial to perpetuate his memory. He has one more connection with the College. His father was the auditor for the accounts of the College for many years.

There was an article on Charlie in Tamil Hindu daily yesterday – 16.10.16 – written by one of our alumni, Mr. SOMASUNDARAM, who did his P.G. in English Lit during 1989 -1991 in our college. It was so touching, personal and quite emotive.
SOMASUNDARAM

Since I found the author’s name in the article I contacted him to get his permission to post it in our blog. He was good enough to send the English version of the article also. Since he did not have the softcopy of the Tamil article he sent his manuscript of it. I have already posted the English version and now in this post I have given his own Tamil manuscript and also the scanned copy of the Tamil version from the daily.
