Golden jubilee celebration in the U.S.

Alumni meet in U.S.

The Postgraduate Physics Department of American College here turned 50 on Saturday and a few alumni of the department living in the United States gathered in Columbia, Maryland, to celebrate the occasion, according to a communiqué issued here on Monday.

The communiqué stated that Professor Richard P.Riesz, founder and first Head of the Department, now living in Pleasant Hill, Tennessee, attended the celebrations which started with lunch at an Indian restaurant followed by a felicitation meeting at a hall in the county library. “Prof. Riesz’s service and impact on students’ lives were recalled with emotional intensity. He received the first copy of a golden jubilee souvenir that contained pictures and articles on the beginning days and a collection of reminiscences by old students and the faculty of the department,” it added.

=======================================================

Got a mail from Prof. V.Srinivasan about the function which was then planned to be conducted in our college campus. But his efforts did not succeed as the present principal and his officers made some not-so-interesting-proposals-and-demands.

Arulraj Navamoni then sent me a mail asking for some photographs of the campus for making a memento to Prof. Riesz - a coffe-table book. To have some recent photos I went with one of my friends, Ravi on an early morning to the campus. Luckily when I was closing the camera after taking the final picture of James Hall, the ground superintendent came to me asking me to stop taking pictures - an 'order' from principal.

Get permission to take photos, he said.. An 'order' from the 'saviours' of the college!!!

So goes the story ....!

  2. Dr. & Mrs. Riesz were the last of the good number of missionaries sent to build the College. He created a Department, built it and trained nearly 400 students some of them are all over the world holding The College flag high. It is unfortunate that in spite of my best efforts I could not have the celebration in Madurai. I am however happy I had some role in organizing the above meeting in USA and in getting the news published in The Hindu. Great.

    On behalf of the Organizing committe which included, Prof. V.Srinivasan from India, V J Nithiyanandham, A. Meenakshi, V. Umadevai and Arulraj Navamoni, I record our thanks to Dharumi, for his tremendous help in getting some contemporary high resolution pictures of the American College campus. I didn't what I pushed him into, and his narration of the photographing expedition reads like a war correspondents journal! Thanks for taking the risk for us.

    Here is the link to view the Golden Jubilee souvenir: http://www.mypublisher.com/index/?e=OHm3Q8zJl3STRZl3Fk6H44wo-lGmViCv&showForm=true

    Also a commemorative coffee mug specially designed by Meenakshi was distributed to participants. (Photo attached)

    In the coffee mug picture, is it okay to show the college emblem?

    2. The College emblem is the property of all associated with the College. How can I get one for my personal use? Is it possible?

  7. My happines at reading the report of the Golden jubilee celebration of the P.G.Physics Department of the American College by a few alumni in the U.S. was tinged with a sense of sorrow. Actually, the College administration should have taken the initiative to have a fitting celebration on the hallowed campus and honored the services of Dr. Riesz, who established and nurtured the Department into a well-known center of study and research, sending out students of calibre. Sincere efforts taken in this direction by friends of the College like Prof. V.Srinivasan did not bear fruit.
    It is a pity that the glorious institution- The American College- is now under the control of those with no sense of history and with no mind to recognize and reward the good work of those who toiled for this college with commitment. The sooner this situation is changed, the better it would be.

    In my view, only a fitting administration deserves to hold a “fitting celebration” marking an occasion as this. If no initiative / cooperation came from the present administration to have the event on our campus it is not all that bad in the sense our approval is not misplaced. What the Physics team has done seems the best under the given circumstance. For those of us in Madurai, they feel nearer at a time the campus feels farer!

  10. Dharumi should be thanked not only for the post in this blog site but also for some of the nice pictures that have appeared in the "coffee table book" brought out by Arulraj. He had managed to click those pictures in spite of the fact he was challenged by a "slave" of the "ruler" of the College.
